Shrouded in Fog XVI

Behind the Photographs

Saturday March 24th, I experienced one of the most amazing displays of nature I have ever witnessed. Not only some of the thickest, but the most enduring fog I have ever seen. Fog is easily one of my favorite subjects to make landscape photographs of, so I was extremely excited when I awoke at 7:00, looked out my window, and saw an incredible amount of fog. Within minutes I drove and arrived at the Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, located along the Mississippi River. I hiked and composed photograph after photograph until the fog dissipated around 11:00-11:30. I often felt entranced by the fog as I walked along taking pictures. I have taken pictures at this park quite a few times, but this was an entirely new experience. Though, it was a benefit to have taken pictures there before, as I had good ideas for locations and subjects to shoot. In the end, I had an awesome time, and am quite pleased with the results.

NOTE: More of this series still to come.

Many people use the analogy of fog to describe a negative state of mind, in which a person is unable to think clearly. However, I have a different take on fog. Fog creates stillness and tends to have a calming effect, while at the same time giving off an eerie feeling of not knowing what lies ahead. It can turn a mundane reality into one of awe, creating an atmosphere that would otherwise not exist. In this way, fog makes us feel as though we are venturing into an unexplored world, altering reality in such a way that even our own neighborhoods-when shrouded in fog-seem different and new. It is as if we are a kid again, experiencing the world for the first time.

From this perspective, I believe a "foggy" mind can be a positive instead of a negative. Many cultures, over thousands of years, have taught us to approach life with a calm and still mind. To treat each day as a new beginning, letting go of any burdens of the past and experiencing our reality with a fresh attitude. With this kind of mindset the most simple things in life do not lose their charm.
Even in the face of adversity, it is said this can prevent us from taking for granted, the air we breathe, the sun, rain, stars, the people in our lives, and everything else that makes up our reality and the world around us.

We must strive to hold onto such a mindset, as it can easily slip out of our grasp. With a series of photographs I am calling Shrouded in Fog, I seek to explore this metaphor for life. Hoping to strengthen my own grasp on this mindset. I welcome you, to join me on this journey.
